How Do You Change Your Life?

There is one area of life that pulls all the others along behind it like a locomotive. It is our calling and the work that flows out of it.

How do you change your life?

There is one area of life that, like a locomotive, pulls many other areas along behind it.

I believe that area is our calling and the work that flows out of it.

Work takes up most of our life. If we spend it doing something we don’t enjoy, we not only earn little money, we also suffer in the process.

We hate our job → we don’t try and simply sit out the required hours → we earn little → we take poor care of ourselves and the people close to us → we feel shame and humiliation, we make excuses → we live a troubled life

But when we have found our calling and started to live it out, the picture is completely different:

We love what we do → we’re on fire for it and ready to grow in it → we put in effort → we’re not watching the clock, we’re absorbed in the process → we get good results → we earn well → we take good care of ourselves and the people close to us → we feel meaning and joy in our calling → we live happily

Obviously, I’m simplifying these two scenarios somewhat to make the point, but the essence is clear.

We decide for ourselves which one to follow. Either look for your life’s work and grow in it, or simply put in “dead hours from 9 to 5” for the money to live on.

For many years I worked in marketing for the money. I saw no deep meaning in it for myself. It didn’t light me up.

I know what it’s like to drag yourself to a meeting you don’t want to go to. I know what it’s like to work with people you don’t even want to say hello to. I know the level of resistance, laziness and procrastination you hit when the work doesn’t interest you.

I used to think work could never be 100% a joy. This is real life, after all, with real problems and challenges. I assumed that putting up with discomfort and suffering (to a greater or lesser degree) was part of any field.

But when I started working closely with teaching people 3 years ago, I realised I had been wrong. Meaning, joy and inspiration all opened up for me here. It brings in money too.

I want to help as many people as possible find and live out their calling. I want to help those who have already found it start earning decent money, so that there is no need to go to a job they don’t love.
