November 2023 Results Across 7 Areas

After a long pause I am bringing this series back: the best book of the month, films, a skill, a hypothesis, a habit and the main insight of November 2023.

After a long pause I am bringing this series back.

1) Best book — “The ONE Thing” by Gary Keller. It lays out very clearly how focusing on a single thing leads to good results. In recent years that one thing for me has been creating and distributing educational content.

2) Films. Nastya and I really enjoyed the new Apple series “Lessons in Chemistry” — a believable, warm-hearted story about a woman making her own way in a man’s world.

Of the films, “Oppenheimer” stayed with me.

3) Most useful video — Arestovych’s seminar “Look for the Woman.” It is freely available on YouTube. About 10-15% of its points are not close to me in spirit, but I agree with the overall idea and message. I see how people kill their relationships with control and anxiety.

There is a continuation of the same theme in Oleksiy’s seminar for men, “Hard to Be a God.”

4) Skill I worked on — answering my co-host’s question immediately and to the point.

Rewatching some of my videos, I see that after a question I start stretching the answer out, using filler words, or qualifying that this is only my subjective experience. Things like that destroy the viewer’s attention, and as a result the social media algorithms cut your reach.

5) Hypothesis I managed to test — paid ads bring in new subscribers reasonably well. For the first time we tried running ads on the videos that had already performed well organically. As a result, people started subscribing on Instagram twice as actively. We will keep testing.

6) Habit I worked on — writing every day. This habit can strengthen the strategic vision I mentioned in point one a great deal.

7) Main insight of the month — people can do the work far better than you can yourself. This observation has been making me happy for the last quarter. Our team has now grown to ten people, and I see tasks being closed better and to a higher standard than if I had handled them myself.

That is why it matters to be able to find the right people, build relationships with them and trust them. Sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised by the result.

Reading helps, but what changes a life is specific steps, not reading. Fifty minutes of conversation is usually enough to see which steps are yours.
