Assembling Shelves With My Father at the Office

An hour of four-handed work with my dad was a reminder of something simple: parents are not forever, and no amount of money buys that time back.

Today my father and I assembled new shelving units at the office — four hands, one job.

It took us under an hour to put together two new units. There is something satisfying about doing something with your hands and seeing the result right away.

This is work I could easily delegate to someone else, but over the years you come to understand the value of time spent with your parents.

They are not forever, and one day all the money in the world will not buy back the chance to spend time with them.

Better to value that chance while you still have it.

Work and urgent matters will always be there. The people close to us will not.

Value your family and — if you can — call your parents.
