Character Development

Character Development

Life is a lot like an RPG, except the main character is you. The more useful skills and traits you develop, the higher a level of life you reach.

Why did I decide to turn my life into a game?

As a kid I loved RPGs and strategy games. I remember playing Diablo 2 and being amazed at how a hero who starts out on level one hacking up monsters becomes a far more powerful character just a few hours into the game.

They gain strength, agility, speed, and other stats. The more your character is leveled up, the harder the levels you can clear, and the more dangerous the monsters and bosses you can beat.

Life is a bit like that kind of RPG. Except in real life, we ourselves are the main character. And the more useful, necessary skills and traits we manage to develop in ourselves, the higher a level of life we can reach.

Our life also has its own “bosses” and enemies, in the form of our problems, our struggles, and the beliefs in our heads that work against us.

Refusing to level up and develop yourself leads to a person getting stuck in place with the same problems and circumstances, over and over. They never move on to the next level.

For some people, the next level means a substantial improvement in their finances. For others, it’s a happy family life, restored health, or success and recognition in their work.

When we feel progress in our life, we feel happiness along with it. But the moment we stop making progress, we feel stuck and unhappy.

I believe that most of us, one way or another, are working on our lives and trying to solve the open questions bothering us right now. Some people do it better, some worse. But nobody can avoid problems entirely and live in a vacuum.

If my public journey of leveling myself up (like a computer game character) helps even one person move toward their goals faster and better, I’ll consider this experiment a worthwhile mission.

Plus, I’m curious how many people this idea might resonate with.
