For over a year our front door annoyed me. I kept postponing the swap, dreading a messy job — it took two hours. On the cost of delay.
The faster we close open problems, the better our life gets.
Since sometime last year, our front door had started to really annoy me. It was still the one the developer put in — we never replaced it during the renovation.
Lately it had begun rattling in the draught, and it let the cold straight through. On top of that it was cheap Chinese hardware that looked pretty rough.
The reason I hadn’t ordered a new one was old footage playing in my head.
A long time ago, at 19, I worked in construction — I did door reveals. I remember from back then how much dust there is, how much mess, and how much fiddling with the reveals is left over after the fitters leave.
So for months I kept pushing the replacement back. I didn’t want to sign up for two days of that grind.
In the end, the whistling and rattling got to me enough that I finally ordered the door. I decided I’d rather sit through the small repair job afterwards.
Today the guys arrived and installed a solid new armoured door in literally two hours. The removal was so clean and simple that I started wondering whether covering the entire kitchen in plastic sheeting had been overkill.
When I saw them neatly trim about a fifth of the reveal, dead level, and calmly set the door in, I realised I’d been afraid of difficulties that never existed.
The whole thing was fast, easy and calm.
I posted in our building’s Viber chat that the old door was free to whoever wanted it — and takers appeared immediately. I even asked them to haul the construction debris away on a trailer. Nothing but upside.
Yes, in a while I’ll call someone in to finish the reveals and cover the expanding foam, but the pleasure of the new door and the quiet in the flat are already here.
What I took from this: don’t tolerate things that cause even minor discomfort. You keep thinking about them, and they wear you down.
And when you close the question, a weight simply lifts off your shoulders and you exhale.
Is there anything in your life right now that annoys you?
