Why Don't We Set Goals for Ourselves?

Why Don't We Set Goals for Ourselves?

Past goal lists didn't come true, and nobody wants to repeat that. So people stop setting goals at all — and end up with an even deeper disappointment.

One skill that can change your whole life.

I believe that skill is the ability to set goals and reach them.

It’s the capacity to choose for yourself the destination you want to arrive at, and then move there.

Want to build a happy relationship? We set a goal of becoming a great husband or wife.

Want to increase our income and reduce financial stress? We set a goal of learning financial literacy and earning more.

Want to get our body in shape? We set a goal of losing weight and working on muscle definition.

And so on with every area. We are able to change what we don’t like about our life.

A lot of people don’t set goals because they want to avoid disappointment.

Maybe in the past you already wrote a beautiful list of goals with a firm intention to pursue them systematically.

But then life changed unpredictably (hello, covid and war), or you ran into laziness and inner conflicts, and all those lists came to look naive at best — foolish, if we’re honest.

Your goals aren’t reached, there’s no sense of progress, there’s apathy and disappointment.

And in order not to feel emotions like that, many people consciously choose not to plan or set goals at all.

But then an even deeper sadness and disappointment arrives, because life stays just as grey as it was.

We feel that we’re standing still, spinning our wheels in the same circumstances year after year.

Yet if you learn to set goals and reach them, joy comes in place of disappointment. You see your life changing, and you start developing and moving forward with even more enthusiasm.

That’s how the flywheel of good changes starts turning.

Do you set goals for the year?

Do you manage to reach some of them?

Reading helps, but what changes a life is specific steps, not reading. Fifty minutes of conversation is usually enough to see which steps are yours.
