It is very easy to live inside the illusion of growth. My main indicator is simple: are my options in life widening or narrowing?
An interesting indicator of our growth.
Sometimes I ask myself: “Am I really developing?”
It is actually a far less obvious question than it looks. It is very easy to live inside the illusion of your own growth. Many people, hearing that question about themselves, would answer without a second thought: “of course I’m developing!” But would that be true?
And how do you find out whether you are really growing or just spinning your wheels?
For me one of the main indicators of growth is a greater number of options and a greater degree of freedom in choosing.
When we take the right action, the space of options in our life expands: new resources become available, the right people show up, time and attention are freed up, bigger financial opportunities appear.
When we make a bad move, the effect is the opposite. The space of options narrows, and choosing becomes harder and more limited.
If I am developing and making wise choices, my possibilities grow. Every year I accumulate more and more dividends from the sensible decisions I made earlier.
If instead every year gets harder and I am choosing between bad and worse, then I am not developing — I am degrading.
That indicator seems very telling to me.
