Walking Toward My Goals in Public

Walking Toward My Goals in Public

People usually see a single post about an achievement, never the strategy behind it. What if I fixed my point A and showed the whole road honestly?

What if you turned your own life into a game?

I’ve been mulling over an interesting experiment lately.

Since about 17 I’ve been setting myself goals every year, and I’ve reached a lot of them. I have a particular system for setting and hitting goals, but almost nobody knows about it (apart from the students of my course on goals).

Usually it looks like this. In December-January I put together a vision for the coming year, and then over four quarters I steadily work through those goals. The process stays in the shadows, and I share only fragments of the road publicly on the blog. The full picture and the intent stay in my head. You see a single post about some achievement, but you don’t see the whole map or which strategy that step belongs to.

So what if I fixed my point A? Told you all honestly where I am right now and why. Laid out my goals and plans. Shared the strategy for getting there.

And then, at some regular interval — monthly or quarterly — published a series of updates on how it’s going. Honestly showing the progress and all the failures, sharing the insights along the way.

I’m even thinking about creating a virtual version of myself and, like in a computer game, assigning that character the various traits and stats I want to level up in real life.

As I actually improve certain skills and hit goals, I’d reflect that progress in the virtual character too.

It could turn out interesting.

It’s like a computer game where you level up your hero’s strength, agility, speed — except here everything is tied to a real person (me), and I only move the numbers on the character when I feel real changes in my life.

What do you think of the idea? Would a process like that be interesting to watch? Could it be useful to you?
