How to Spin Up the Flywheel of Change

How to Spin Up the Flywheel of Change

One very small but concrete improvement every day. Why 5-10 minutes is enough to start the flywheel turning in any area of your life.

How do you get the flywheel of positive change spinning?

You can make one very small but very concrete improvement every day.

This approach works in any area of life, but let’s look at it through the lens of our work.

Suppose we want our career or our business to reach a new level. What do we actually do about it?

I’m a believer in goals of every kind, in plans, mind maps and systems of control. I think these are very important things for developing what we do.

Alongside them, I try to spend 5-10 minutes every day improving something in my work. It might be a decision to sort out the documents in the cabinet, or to run an extra socket in the office for the water cooler, or to delete unnecessary files from Google Drive. Sometimes I open Notion, our working environment, and think about what could be simplified and which data has already gone stale.

It doesn’t matter much what exactly it is — what matters is that these improvements to the whole system are daily and systematic.

As human beings, we feel happy every time we sense progress and growth. The moment we realise that we’ve moved forward compared to who we were yesterday (even by a couple of millimetres), our body produces dopamine and we feel good.

I don’t know why so many people do the same thing for years, and why they have no desire to improve the space and the environment around them… Why there’s no desire to reach a new level in their development, their work, their health, their relationships.

Because very often it all starts with one decision and 10 minutes a day. That really can be enough to start the flywheel of positive change turning in any area of our lives.

It’s precisely the small things we do every day across many areas of life that lead to significant growth over the long run.

Do you agree that happiness is progress? Do you feel it in some area of your life?
