On 1 December 2006 I wrote a promise in my notebook: not a drop of alcohol, not a single cigarette. Seventeen years on, I've never regretted it.
I haven’t touched alcohol for 17 years and 3 months.
I remember walking home after yet another school disco with a heavy head. My classmates and I had just mixed several different kinds of drink. I felt awful.
As I passed my school on the way home, I thought: “Why am I knowingly wrecking my health with my own money?” When I got home, I wrote a promise in my notebook: from 1 December 2006, not a drop of alcohol and not a single cigarette would ever pass my lips.
Seventeen years have gone by since then. The decision turned out to be a wise one. I’ve never once regretted it.
Some people use alcohol to fight stress, some drown their pain in it, some just want to run from their problems and forget. The motivation for drinking varies enormously from person to person, but the consequences are the same for everyone — tragic.
I’ve never seen a single person whom alcohol made happy, but I’ve seen hundreds of broken families where one partner (or both) drink.
To get this plague out of your life, sometimes a single decision is enough.
Do you know people whose lives are playing out as a tragedy because of alcohol?

Reading helps, but what changes a life is specific steps, not reading. Fifty minutes of conversation is usually enough to see which steps are yours.
